The director of the Brazilian Society of Immunizations, Renato Kfouri, approved the announcement by the Ministry of Health of the booster dose against Covid-19 for all Brazilians after 5 months of the second dose.
In an interview with CNN Radio on Wednesday (17), the infectologist stated that the interval of loss of protection after vaccination varies according to age and the standardization of the interval in 5 months is “very adequate.”
“It facilitates the application logistics, the booster dose is welcome and is one of the pillars of the virus containment strategy”, he said.
According to Kfouri, there are three pillars to control the pandemic: “Increased number of vaccinated in the total population, including children and adolescents, high vaccination coverage among this eligible population, and offering booster doses as we identify the loss of protection.”
“It is the best recipe we have, we are on the right path with the introduction of the booster dose”, he added.
The SBIm director also said that Brazil is at an advantage compared to the situation in Europe – which is experiencing an increase in Covid-19 cases.
“Here we have a time of recent vaccination, which protects us from the imminent wave, we had longer intervals of doses of AstraZeneca and Pfizer, which seems to guarantee longer protection, the gamma circulation that protected us by the infection, are differentials.”
“The secret to controlling the pandemic seems to be keeping protection rates high, that is to say, as many vaccinates as possible, with homogeneous coverage and offering a booster dose, the epidemic teaches us at this time, we need to continue vaccinating, even in a low scenario circulation”, he concluded.
