“We take this opportunity to, from now on, apologize to everyone who had access to this type of content involving some students from the Faculty of Medicine, who, regardless of whether or not they carried out the acts described, find themselves in an unacceptable situation in the eyes of a democratic and organized civil society”, added the entity.

The association also said that, “despite all the condemnation promoted by some sectors”, it believes that “everyone has the right, if investigated, to defend themselves, and if the accusations are true, to be condemned exclusively by the courts”.

The former students asked Unisa to carry out “a rigorous investigation process without taking the dangerous path of unbridled witch hunting” and for students to support the investigations by collaborating with whatever is necessary.

“To the entire Brazilian population, especially Paulista, we once again report with bitterness in our words, most likely you, or a family member, or loved one have already been seen, treated, operated or diagnosed by a Dr. Santo Amaro, please know, separate the events in question with all the rich history, tradition and good practices of this institution!”, states the association.

“To the former students of the Santo Amaro medical school, who have been victims of countless messages, trials and mockery from bad people, opportunists and incapable of making the necessary distinction between the facts and the reality of who we are, we ask that you go ahead! We have been through countless crises and successes over the years, all crises, without exception, have been overcome! We’ll get through this one too!”, he concluded.

MEC defends student accountability

The Minister of Education, Camilo Santana, classified as disgusting the attitude of the students who were naked and simulated masturbation during a women’s volleyball match, in São Carlos, in the interior of São Paulo.

During an event in São Paulo, this Tuesday (19), Santana stated that President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) expressed concern about holding those involved accountable.

“I don’t know how it took so long for this fact, which happened in April, to become public. In fact, the president called me from New York worried about this episode. We are taking appropriate measures. Despite the university taking the decision to expel them, they must be held accountable. We cannot imagine a young person with this type of attitude, especially a young person who wants to be a doctor in this country,” he said during a meeting of journalists at the 7th International Congress of Education Journalism.

Despite the institution where the student’s attitude occurred being private, the MEC has the role of regulating all Brazilian education. Therefore, the ministry notified the institution. According to Camilo Santana, the university responded that six students were expelled.
