The month of November marks Blue November, a campaign that seeks to make men aware of the risks of prostate cancer, which last year alone was the cause of 44 deaths per day.
THE CNN Radio the president of the Brazilian Society of Urology Alfredo Canalini said that the initiative has had “a good result.”
“We have the perception that, due to the demand that exists in the public and private service, the number of men who have sought prostate exams has increased.”
For him, this “is a reflection of the awareness campaign.”
At the same time, he points out that, this year, the motto is “Health is also a man’s talk”: “We have broadened the focus beyond prostate cancer.”
Canalini reports that girls have a health care routine that starts much earlier than boys.
“It’s an almost cultural difficulty”, he evaluates.
According to him, this reflects on life expectancy: “Women live, on average, 7 to 8 years longer than men.”
According to the expert, there is a risk group for prostate cancer, which are black men, those who have a family history of the disease or severe obesity.
The urologist recalls that a sedentary lifestyle, poor diet and smoking collaborate to worsen the condition of prostate cancer – and other silent diseases.
Anyway, the doctor warns that the ideal is to identify the disease as quickly as possible, to considerably increase the chances of cure.
“We have tests and tools that make it possible to identify prostate cancer at a very early stage,” he said.
Men belonging to the risk group should follow up with a urologist from the age of 45, while those without risk factors, from the age of 50.
