President Joe Biden delivers a rare address to the nation at the White House on Sunday (14).
Biden began his Oval Office address by emphasizing the need to “lower the temperature” in politics.
“I want to talk tonight about the need to lower the temperature in our politics and remember that when we disagree, we are not enemies, we are neighbors, we are friends, we are coworkers, we are citizens, and most importantly, we are fellow Americans. We must stand together,” he said.
“Yesterday’s shooting at Donald Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania calls on all of us to take a step back, take stock of where we are, and how we move forward from here,” he added.
In his speech, Biden echoed the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, which occurred the previous day at a rally in Pennsylvania.
Listing a series of previous attacks on public figures across the country, the president said the country cannot allow political violence to become normalized.
“There is no place in America for this kind of violence. Any violence. Period. No exceptions. We cannot allow this violence to be normalized,” Biden said in the Oval Office.
Among previous attacks he cited the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol and the beating of Nancy Pelosi’s husband.
