“We cannot be subject to a fuel price increase decided by ten guys”, says PL leader

The leader of the PL in the Chamber of Deputies, deputy Altineu Côrtes (PL-RJ), told the CNN that expects to have collected by Wednesday (22) the signatures for the CPI that intends to investigate Petrobras’ pricing policy. The request talks about investigating “alleged irregularities in the process of defining prices for fuels and oil derivatives in the domestic market”.

The parliamentarian criticized the latest increase in gasoline and diesel prices, announced by the state-owned company on Friday (17).

“It is not possible for the Chamber and Congress to work, vote on issues to try to contain the crisis, and we are subject to the increase in fuel prices decided by ten guys”, complained Côrtes, referring to the Petrobras board.

“It is not possible for the price to go up in a stroke of a pen, this process of defining the price of fuel needs to be more transparent, and that is what the CPI wants”, he said.

Côrtes also said that the CPI is not being carried out to remove the responsibility for the increase in fuel prices from the government of President Jair Bolsonaro.

“This is Petrobras’ fault. We can no longer bear to see Brazilians being harmed by the company”.

In 2018, then Senator Vanessa Grazziotin (PCdoB-AM) filed a request to investigate the pricing policy practiced by Petrobras.

At the time, the parliamentarian’s idea was very similar to the proposal led by the current government: to investigate the “construction of the price of fuel and cooking gas, in addition to analyzing the state-owned divestment policy”.

The proposal did not succeed. For the leader of the PL in the Chamber, even in an election year there is room for the CPI to be installed, and there are, according to him, suspicions about the conduct of José Mauro Coelho, who resigned this Monday (21) from the command of Petrobras.

“He was already fired. Why did he stay in office until the fuel price hike? Did you want to give the raise to be better with the market? Is it serving any interest?”, he argued.

THE CNN contacted Petrobras and is awaiting answers.
