“We cannot destroy the country and stay locked at home in fear of Covid-19”, says Queiroga

The Minister of Health, Marcelo Queiroga, participated in a walk to encourage physical activity in Rio de Janeiro. After the agenda, he spoke about the increase in cases of covid-19 in Brazil. According to him, with the relaxation of measures against the disease, the increase in cases is natural, but he stressed that the health system is prepared for this growth.

“There has been a relaxation of the so-called non-pharmacological measures, it is natural that the number of cases will increase, but our health system has the capacity to meet and, in practice, what we have: a drop in the number of deaths. You remember that at the peak of the Ômicron variant, we had many cases, but we didn’t have a pressure on the health system.

The SUS faced an entire Greek alphabet of variants and with the SUS we are going to face as many variants as arise and overcome them”, said Queiroga.

Queiroga also spoke about the increase in restrictions in Chinese cities to contain Covid-19.

“China has been practicing these lockdowns since the beginning, and what was the result? In fact, President Bolsonaro from the beginning said that it is necessary to face the health problem but we also need to take care of our economy. We can’t destroy the country and have everyone locked in the house in fear. We have to live with the virus, it will not go extinct, we have to live with the disease and for that we have our health system”.

Regarding the cases of hepatitis that are being monitored in Brazil, the minister said that all cases are being monitored and none have been confirmed.

Release of funds for physical activities

The walk that the minister took part in lasted about 20 minutes. It started in Almirante Júlio de Noronha square, in Leme and continued to the front of the Copacabana Palace. After physical activity, Queiroga signed the ordinance that provides financial resources for 5,000 Brazilian municipalities that will be able to start accreditation for the action of Incentive of Physical Activity for Primary Health Care as of next Monday (16). The idea is to increase the healthy practice of exercise in the population, especially among people with chronic diseases.

Queiroga was accompanied by authorities such as former Minister of Health Eduardo Pazuello, the acting mayor of Rio, Nilton Caldeira, who took over temporarily while Eduardo Paes fulfills his agenda in the United States, Raphael Câmara, secretary of the Secretariat of Primary Health Care , Marcus Dias, Deputy Executive Secretary, Mário Sérgio Ribeiro, Undersecretary of Surveillance and Primary Health Care, Rodrigo Prado, Municipal Secretary of Health.
