We cannot turn our backs on Ukraine and Israel, says Biden in speech

The United States cannot “turn its back” on Ukraine and Israel amid the conflicts in which the two countries are fighting, President Joe Biden said in an address to the nation this Thursday (19).

“History has taught us that when terrorists don’t pay for terror and dictators don’t pay for their aggression, they cause more chaos, death and destruction,” Biden pointed out.

“If we step back and let Putin erase Ukraine’s independence, wouldn’t other aggressors in the world dare to try the same thing?” he asked.

Thus, he stressed that he will send an “urgent budget request” to Congress on Friday in order to “fund America’s national security needs to support our critical partners, including Israel and Ukraine.”

He called the request “an unprecedented commitment to Israel’s security that will enhance Israel’s qualitative military advantage to which we are committed.”

Biden also said that “conflicts may seem distant”, but that they are “vital” to the security of the United States, as, in his words, threats against the country would continue to increase.

“If we don’t stop Putin’s appetite for power and control in Ukraine, it will not be limited to Ukraine alone,” he highlighted.

“Turning point” in history and promise for hostages

At the beginning of the televised speech, Biden also highlighted that we are facing “a turning point in history” amid the war in Israel.

He then renewed his promise to rescue US citizens who had been taken hostage by Hamas, saying their safety is his highest priority.

“We are looking at every avenue to bring your loved ones home,” he added.

Hamas and Putin share goal of “annihilating a neighboring democracy”, says Biden

Joe Biden also commented that the attacks on Israel and the invasion of Ukraine share common motivations.

“Hamas and Putin pose different threats, but they have this in common: they both want to completely annihilate a neighboring democracy,” he said.
