We don’t know which way it could fall, firefighter says about building on March 25

Firefighters continue, this Wednesday (13), in the fight against the last outbreaks of fire in a building in the region of Rua 25 de Março, in downtown São Paulo.

The mayor of São Paulo, Ricardo Nunes (MDB), told CNN this Wednesday (13), that the City Hall must request the demolition of the building.

Since Tuesday (12), the work to fight the flames has been carried out with distance by the authorities due to the risk of the structure collapsing, at number 95 of Rua Barão de Duprat, in the Sé neighborhood, where the fire started almost 60 hours ago, on Sunday (10).

In a conversation with reporters at the scene, this Wednesday (13), Captain Maycon Cristo, from the Fire Department, explained that the entire region is isolated because it is not known what the collapse will be like if it happens.

“The building that is still burning is in danger of collapsing. When and if it collapses, we don’t know how it will behave. If he’s going to fall, which way will he fall? That’s why this precaution in the area that he would possibly reach in case of collapse”, said the captain.

The City of São Paulo announced on Tuesday night (12), after carrying out an inspection, the interdiction of nine buildings due to the risk of falling.

“The engineers studied the possible risks and models of collapse of this structure, and they understood that these buildings are located in an area that could be reached in case of collapse”, explained the firefighter.

Faced with the risk of collapse, firefighters had to leave the building, where they were carrying out the aftermath work, to look for small fires and thus completely extinguish the fire.

“We are advised not to do the internal combat, we are fighting the external part of the building. This slows down the fire a bit. We cannot in loco turn over what is burning and extinguish it there”, comments Captain Maycon Cristo.

He explained that firefighters are using water and foam to fight the last flames and lower the temperature of the place.

Starting this Wednesday (13), the arrival of a cold front formed in the south of the country should lower temperatures in São Paulo and possibly cause rain.

“A calm, calm rain would help to cool the building. If it starts to rain with a storm and wind, it would greatly disrupt the work”, commented Cristo.
