In an interview with CNN this Tuesday (13), the chief economist at BTG Pactual and former Secretary of the National Treasury, Mansueto Almeida, stated that it is not desirable for the BNDES to follow the same policy seen between 2011 and 2014.
Almeida commented on the perspectives for the bank after the announcement of Aloizio Mercadante as the institution’s next president.
“We don’t need the BNDES from 2011 to 2014, which lent around BRL 300 billion a year. But that the consequence of this was a very large increase in the public debt, ”he said.
For the economist, if the bank resumes the aggressive policy of loans with subsidies, the cost will be high for damaging the public debt and also weakening the monetary policy that has been made by the Central Bank (BC) to fight inflation.
“The BNDES has room to increase loans by around R$500 billion. So, it has to work in conjunction with the private sector. The bank, in recent years, reduced loans, but we had a great development of the capital market”, explained Almeida.
The former Secretary of the Treasury also commented on the other names announced by the future Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, to occupy positions at the top level of the portfolio.
Haddad confirmed, in a press conference this Tuesday (13), the name of economist Gabriel Galípolo as number two in the portfolio. He also announced Bernard Appy as Special Secretary for Tax Reform.
