President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) said this Thursday (9) that he feels Brazil’s sovereignty is threatened in the Amazon and that the country knows how to preserve the forest. The statement was given at the first meeting he had with US President Joe Biden – the bilateral meeting took place in Los Angeles during the Summit of the Americas .
“We often feel threatened in our sovereignty in this region. [a Amazônia], but the fact is that Brazil preserves its territory very well. More than 85% of the Brazilian Amazon is preserved. Our environmental legislation is very strict,” he said in the excerpt of the meeting open to the press.
The environment is a topic of interest to the Biden administration and mention of it was planned by representatives from both sides of the meeting.
Bolsonaro said that Brazil “feeds 1 billion people in the world with high-level agriculture” and that the Amazon has “incalculable riches and biodiversity, mineral riches and drinking water”. He also declared that the country could become the biggest exporter of clean energy in the world.
The 2022 elections were also discussed by the president in the meeting with Biden.
“We want free, reliable and auditable elections so that there is no doubt after the election. And I’m sure it will be carried out in that democratic spirit. I arrived for democracy and I am sure that when I leave the government, it will also be in a democratic way.”
