We finally have our first look at Tom Hanks as Gepetto in live-action Pinocchio!

2022 is the great year of Pinocchio! It seems like a coincidence that we’re expecting two new movies of the endearing classic tale this year: one from Netflix and one from Disney.

The Disney feature film will recount the beloved story of the wooden puppet who embarks on an exciting adventure to become a real boy and will feature a great cast. Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, whom we saw starring in the hit series The Curse of Bly Manor, will be in charge of giving voice to Pinocchio. In addition, Joseph Gordon-Levitt will play Jiminy Cricket, Oscar nominee Cynthia Erivo will play the Blue Fairy, and Tom Hanks will play the unforgettable Geppetto.

Disney just unveiled a first look at Tom Hanks as Geppetto and we couldn’t be more excited! The Disney adaptation is one of two to be released this year. The other, an animated version in stop motion by directors Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson, will be released on Netflix in December of this year.

Both adaptations come from the classic children’s novel The adventures of Pinocchio written by the Italian author Carlo Collodi, which was initially published in serial form in the newspaper Giornale per I bambini in 1881 and has inspired countless film and television projects, including the 1940 Disney animated classic.

Disney’s version, premiering exclusively on its Disney+ streaming service, will be a live-action adaptation of the animated classic. So it’s no surprise that Pinocchio, who now appears alongside Tom Hanks’ Geppetto in the first frame of the film, looks exactly like his counterpart in the 1940 cartoon version. Pinocchio will be directed by Oscar winner Robert Zemeckis, who would undoubtedly like to be remembered for films like Forrest Gump and Return to the future after his recent productions flopped at the box office.

We’ll probably have to wait until summer to see the first trailer for Pinocchioafter all, the film will not arrive on Disney + until September 2022. Until then, fortunately, the service of streaming will entertain us with numerous innovations in the coming months.
