We have a war scenario in Petrópolis, says national secretary of Civil Defense

The national secretary of Civil Defense, Alexandre Lucas Alves, said, this Wednesday (16), in an interview with CNNthat the scenario is of war after the heavy rains that hit the city of Petrópolis, in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro.

“We arrived by air. The State Government placed the helicopter at our disposal and we flew over together with the works director. What we saw now during our ground survey is a war scenario, I literally think this is the best expression”, declared Alves.

“It was an extremely serious disaster, with a lot of human, material, economic and social damage. It really is an extremely serious situation that needs the support of the federal government and the state government and the municipal government for everyone’s support”, he continued.

In six hours on Tuesday (15) 260 millimeters of rain were recorded, causing 189 landslides and 229 occurrences, with about 35 to 50 houses affected. According to the local Civil Defense, at least 66 people died.

According to the Climatempo forecast, the storms should still reach the Serrana Region in the coming days. The expectation is that it will rain heavily between the middle of Thursday (17) and the afternoon of Friday (18). Specialists say that the volume of rain should be lower than that observed yesterday.
