We have the necessary mechanisms to fight the pandemic, says PAHO/WHO director

The World Health Organization (WHO) told the press that Europe is experiencing a “ceasefire” that could result in the end of the pandemic on the continent.

For the physician and assistant director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), WHO, Jarbas Barbosa, “we have the necessary mechanisms to approach its end [da pandemia]. We have vaccines, but we need to ensure that all countries in the world have equitable access to vaccines.”

Barbosa stated that it is still difficult to predict the end of the pandemic – which depends on a number of factors, such as the vaccination rate and the emergence of possible variants.

According to him, the WHO assessment is based on hypotheses, starting with the decline in the wave caused by the Ômicron variant. Then there is the high rate of vaccination in many countries on the continent.

PAHO’s assistant director warned of inequality in vaccination around the world. According to him, the organization’s goal is for all countries to reach a minimum of 70% vaccination coverage by June this year.

“No one will be protected if everyone is not. The less vaccination there is in a country, the more people will have contact with the virus and the more chance of a mutation we will have,” she explained.

The doctor also warned of the importance of the complete vaccine cycle against serious cases of Covid-19.

“When we look at the data, data from the United States and also from Brazil, we see that the ICUs are full of people who have not been vaccinated or who have taken an incomplete vaccination schedule,” said Barbosa.
