National Immunization Day is celebrated this June 9th.
The date brings “a lot to celebrate”, but also some concerns, especially with the drop in vaccination coverage in Brazil.
This is the assessment of the director of the Brazilian Society of Immunizations (SBIM) Juarez Cunha.
A CNN Radio he stated that people’s distrust is due to a series of factors, such as lack of vaccines at health centers, opening hours for immunization and lack of risk perception.
“We have to regain the confidence we had 30, 40 years ago, which came from trust in institutions, government officials and health professionals”, he said.
The specialist argues that all these actors, during the Covid-19 pandemic, were the target of politicization to the detriment of what science advocated.
“We still haven’t been able to revert it, we have to recover this value, Brazilians never asked where the vaccine was from, what technology it was, and yet they were immunized.”
For Juarez, information is needed, both for professionals and for society; and communication, with publicity and publicity pieces.
“We have safe, effective and free vaccines, we have to take our children to get vaccinated, and all age groups too”, he added.
At the same time, he reinforces that “the value of vaccines is impressive, with the eradication of diseases, in addition to the elimination and control of many others.”
“We have a wonderful calendar, which especially protects children, who are the most vulnerable”, he reinforced.
