“We just want to return to Brazil safely”, says Brazilian player in Ukraine

In an interview with CNN this Thursday (24), Fabinho, midfielder for Metalist 1925, from the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, said that he is apprehensive about the situation in the country after the Russian attack and that he wants to return to Brazil.

“We just want to get out of Ukraine and get home safely,” he said. “If I had known what was going to happen, I wouldn’t have come back,” she said.

The midfielder explained that the team did pre-season in Turkey and that after two weeks they started to receive news that a war was possible. When asking the club’s officers about the matter, he had the answer that they could be calm and that there would be no conflict.

However, when they arrived at the Ukrainian airport, they encountered armed soldiers. Again, the recommendation was to stay calm.

“When we arrived at the airport, we came across this. It was a blow to us. During the week, the images and news were arriving and we were apprehensive, until a moment comes that there is no way out”, she said, adding that she has not yet been able to contact the Itamaraty.

According to the midfielder, training continued normally, until they were informed yesterday (23) that they would have two days off and that the situation would be updated on Saturday (26). They would play Shakhtar Donetsk.

Kharviv is in eastern Ukraine, a few hours from the breakaway regions of Donetsk and Luhansk. According to the player, the authorities and club members advised to stock up on food, not leave the house and, in the event of “something more serious”, head to the subway.

“I am very apprehensive and afraid. I don’t know what will happen in the next few days. We Brazilians who played in the country communicated a lot and people in Kiev said they saw fighter jets passing by, others in another region said they heard bombs,” said Fabinho.

He stated that he received several messages of affection and concern and that his wife is in Brazil.

understand the conflict

After months of military escalation and intemperance on the Ukrainian border, Russia attacked the Eastern European country. At dawn this Thursday (24), Russian forces began to bomb several regions of the country – follow the repercussion live on CNN.

Hours earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin authorized a “special military operation” in the Donbas region (eastern Ukraine, where the breakaway regions of Luhansk and Donetsk are located, which he recognized as independent).

What was seen in the following hours, however, was an attack on almost the entire Ukrainian territory, with explosions in several cities, including the capital Kiev.

According to Ukrainian officials, dozens of deaths have been confirmed in the armies of both countries.

In his speech before the attack, Putin justified the action by saying that Russia could not “tolerate threats from Ukraine”. Putin urged Ukrainian soldiers to “put down your weapons and go home”. The Russian leader further stated that he will not accept any kind of foreign interference.

This attack on the former Soviet neighbor threatens to destabilize Europe and involve the United States.

Russia has been tightening its military grip around Ukraine for the past year, amassing tens of thousands of troops, equipment and artillery at the country’s gates.

In recent weeks, diplomatic efforts to defuse tensions have been unsuccessful.

The escalation in the years-long conflict between Russia and Ukraine has triggered the continent’s biggest security crisis since the Cold War, raising the specter of a dangerous confrontation between Western powers and Moscow.
