We need active search actions to reverse school dropout, says pedagogue

Data from the School Census pointed out the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on basic education. The dropout rate, for example, more than doubled in 2021 compared to 2020.

In an interview with CNN Radio the pedagogue and specialist in educational psychology, Anna Helena Altenfelder, stated that the important thing is to keep in mind that “there is still work to be done” at this moment.

“It is possible to have actions that can move towards overcoming the challenges. We have short-term, medium-term and long-term measures, and they all need to be considered,” he said.

In the expert’s assessment, in the short term, “it is necessary to bring these young people who are out of school, with active search, and we already have the technology for that.”

“Family and community involvement is also necessary. Colleagues can participate in this process by reaching out to those who are far from schools,” he added.

After completing this first part, it is necessary that students “have space to talk about their issues, insecurities, experience of losses, with exchange of experiences” and, in this way, remain in school.

“Then, a diagnosis of learning and prioritization is necessary so that recomposition activities are carried out, with strategies with protagonism, involvement, and participation of these young people.”

Anna Helena also advocated that internet connectivity – which isolated students during the pandemic and contributed to educational damage – for both students and schools, be expanded.
