We need campaigns to encourage vaccination against Covid, says professor

A study by Sou_Ciência, from Unifesp, pointed out that 30% of respondents still believe that vaccines against Covid-19 are experimental.

The survey heard 1,200 people aged over 16 from all regions of Brazil.

In addition, about 17% do not know if the vaccines have scientific evidence.

At the same time, 52% of respondents said they trust immunizers.

THE CNN Radio Sou_Ciência coordinator Professor Soraya Smaili stated that the data “surprised a little.”

“The vast majority remain confident in vaccines, but it surprised us because the number is still high, considering that we talk a lot and that the pandemic is not over”, he added.

Soraya highlighted that “people seem to have minimized the effect of the pandemic and the protection provided by vaccines.”

For this reason, the professor argues that “there is still work to be done”: “We have to work with society to explain the scientific method and show that they are scientifically proven.”

She believes that public policies have to be made in this sense.

“We have to encourage vaccination, monitoring the increase in the number of cases, testing, because when we test we discover a positive case, that person can avoid passing it on to others.”

Booster doses, according to the researcher, are important: “People have to try to take them, and with the arrival of the bivalent vaccine even more, it is a vaccination that will enter the calendar in Brazil”.
