The president of the National Association of Transvestites Keila Simpson is the first transvestite to receive the title of Doctor Honoris Causa from the State University of Rio de Janeiro.
The nomination takes place when a university wants to award a title of honor to a personality for the importance of his work.
Activist for the rights of the LGBTQIA+ population since 1990, she said that she hopes that the tribute will serve as an inspiration for other people.
“I hope they feel reflected and can aspire to receive titles like this”, he said, to CNN Radio on CNN No Plural +.
According to her, Brazil will remain at the top of the ranking of countries that most kill trans people “until we think about social inclusion policies” specific to this population.
At the same time, she sees that “the awareness of Brazilian society has been happening in an important way, with advances in the legislature, for example, with elected trans parliamentarians.”
Keila points out that “it is necessary to mobilize society to help us in the process of re-educating society.”
“We claim equal rights, we just want the share of rights denied to us for so long”, he concluded.
