In an interview with CNN, the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, showed caution when talking about the scope of the European Union’s action in the war in Ukraine and defended that action should be ahead of diplomacy and sanctions.
“Ukraine is not a member of NATO. So we need to be very cautious. We need to do everything in our power, but we have to consider that Russia has nuclear weapons and it is very important that we avoid a third international conflict,” Michel said.
“Therefore, at the diplomatic level, for example, we want to offer more support to Ukraine, to guarantee a ceasefire as soon as possible.”
The European Council is the institution that sets the political agenda and priorities of the European Union.
“My point is this, for everyone in the world. Russia has the nuclear bomb, so it’s an extremely serious and dangerous situation. Our priority is to help Ukraine resist and stand firm in the conflict. We decided to supply lethal equipment to Ukraine. For NATO members, [ir além] it would be going too far and bringing us closer to a Third World War. We want to opt for sanctions, to affect the Russian economy and go for the option of political pressure.”
