In an interview with CNN the coordinator of FGV Agro, Guilherme Bastos, defended the need for a technical and pragmatic debate on the fires in Brazil, “instead of blaming the productive sector”.
Bastos argued that it is crucial to bring concrete data to adequately address environmental problems.
He highlighted the presence of parliamentarians committed to bringing technical issues to the debate, moving away from ideological discussions.
“We really need to bring data so that the problems can be properly addressed,” said the coordinator.
Shared responsibilities
The expert emphasized the importance of distinguishing between the responsibilities of the productive sector and those that fall to the Executive and Judicial branches.
According to Bastos, it is essential to consider areas without defined possession or ownership, where direct responsibility cannot be attributed to the productive sector.
He also mentioned the previous government’s efforts to raise international funds to combat the fires in the Pantanal.
He highlighted that climate change has contributed to the excessive accumulation of dry matter in some regions, increasing the risk of fires.
Environmental balance
The coordinator of FGV Agro recalled the importance of the “Banco Pantaneiro”, a traditional practice that helped maintain balance in the Pantanal ecosystem.
“Many times, it is precisely because of this problem of climate change that there ends up being an excess accumulation of dry matter,” he explained.
Bastos concluded by reiterating the need for an in-depth technical debate to develop appropriate actions to combat fires and other environmental problems.
He argued that this approach is more productive than simply placing all responsibility on the productive sector.
