We need to make progress in dealing with structural racism, says activist

In an interview with CNN, the activist and founder of the Instituto Identidades do Brasil (ID_BR), Luana Génot, stated that society needs to progress in the treatment of structural racism. According to her, acts like this happen constantly.

“It’s where I follow a black person, where I think a black person is suspicious, I’ll change sidewalks when I see a black man or I don’t give a job to a black person because of their hair and skin color”, he exemplified Luana.

“We need to have more anti-racist education, review public health policies, see employment and drug policies in the country.”

This Saturday (20), the Black Consciousness holiday completes 50 years. The day symbolizes the fight for rights and is also the date of the death of Zumbi dos Palmares.

“We have a lot to advance even after the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the holiday,” said Luana.

“When we think that this theme does not permeate the country as a whole in a strong, consistent way, I think that this small gesture already shows that this agenda is still not a priority for many people.”
