We need to rebuild science in the country, says new ABC president

Unifesp biomedical, Helena Nader, was elected to preside over the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC). She is the first woman to hold the position in 105 years.

In an interview with CNN Rádio, she said that “it is sad” to celebrate a brand like this, which should be commonplace, but reinforced that, at the same time, it is “important that it is done”.

“I wanted to say that it is an honor to be in this position and to tell you that this is not my achievement, but that of a collective, I was surrounded by incredible people who helped me build this moment,” he said.

According to her, alongside a board of 12 other people from different areas and regions, the objective will be “to work on the reconstruction of Brazilian science.”

Helena believes that it is necessary “to place education and science at the level that should be placed in any nation.”

In the evaluation of biomedicine, there was a cut of resources for teaching, especially the public. In public universities, the reduction in investments “was tragic.”

“The Academy can help with studies and partnerships, because ABC has highly capable people, together, we will be able to test and diagnose, what I see as very serious is that the school is killing curiosity, especially among children, we are not getting it right, the Science teaching is to learn to understand the world that is inserted, this is very relevant”, he added.
