We never asked the US and Europe to behave differently about the war, says Lula

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) stated that Brazil never asked the United States and the European Union to change their positions regarding the war in Ukraine.

In an interview with the Portuguese state media RTP published this Sunday (23), Lula was questioned for his statements about the US and the EU prolonging the conflict by sending military weapons.

“We never asked Europe and the US to behave differently. What we want is for them to also start talking about peace,” replied the Brazilian, saying he was happy with French President Emmanuel Macron’s initiative to talk to Chinese leader Xi Jinping about a possible resolution to the conflict.

Lula again denied that Brazil has an ambiguous position regarding the war. In a press conference this Saturday (22), the president denied having equalized the responsibilities of Russia and Ukraine.

“Brazil has no ambiguous position. Brazil has a very clear decision: it condemned Russia for invading Ukraine’s territorial space. Point. This is the public behavior in Brazil”, he told RTP.

“What Brazil does not want is to align itself with the war. Brazil wants to align itself with a group of countries that need to work to build peace. If everyone is directly involved in war, the question I ask is: who is going to talk about peace?”, he added.

The petista also stated that it is necessary to “build a narrative that convinces Putin and Zelensky that war is not the best way out to solve problems”.

This Tuesday (25), Lula is expected to participate in a solemn welcoming session at the Assembly of the Republic, the Portuguese parliament.

Questioned by the reporter about the speech he wants to pass on to Portugal, which does not collide with the Portuguese position in relation to Ukraine, Lula stated that “Portugal takes the position it wants in relation to Ukraine”.

“I don’t have the right, the authority to say what Portugal’s correct position is. The most I can do is say what Brazil’s position is, and, just as I respect the decisions of others, I would like them to respect Brazil’s,” he said.

“And Brazil works on the possibility of building peace in the world because war does not lead to anything, it does not produce anything positive. It produces death, unemployment and destruction,” he concluded.
