We played and that’s enough: Epic Games Store takes away a free game from distribution from Russian gamers

The management of the digital video game store Epic Games Store at one time came up with a fairly simple strategy for attracting an audience to their platform – the main competitor, Steam, constantly distributes some video games absolutely free of charge and, importantly, without restriction on further use. This means that if the user managed to take it to his library during the distribution period of a particular game, then later he will be able to play as much as he wants, as if the gamer actually bought this game, and did not receive it as a gift. True, yesterday, January 13, users of the DTF portal found out that this attraction of unprecedented generosity has one serious drawback – games can simply be withdrawn.

The fact is that the space simulator Kerbal Space Program, which the platform gave to everyone from January 5 to 12, was simply taken away from Russian gamers. Many players who have an account registered specifically in Russia received an official email notification that the Kerbal Space Program video game was removed from the user’s library with a full refund of funds spent on the purchase of this content. This means that the Epic Games Store will refund the players 0 rubles, and in return will remove the game from the library permanently. Which, of course, is extremely disappointing, because the game is actually quite high quality.

Moreover, immediately after the end of the distribution of the Kerbal Space Program video game, oddities began to appear on the platform – for some players from Russia the game was available and displayed both on the site and in the store search, while for other users the space simulator was completely absent. But even after the wave of removals, the strangeness did not end, because some users did not withdraw the game, but it simply does not start now. Players note that the downloaded game at startup gives an error stating that the user simply does not have rights to own the Kerbal Space Program.

Of course, gamers quickly figured out the reasons for this situation – Kerbal Space Program is a project of Private Divisio, which is a subsidiary of the world’s largest video game publisher Take-Two Interactive. This publisher currently does not operate in Russia, but it is worth noting that no one deleted or blocked the other video games of the giant. Accordingly, although the publisher officially left, the technical support of the same GTA V works and responds, including in Russian, but for some reason the developers decided to remove the free single game, and even after the free distribution – it’s as ugly as possible.
