We prefer conviction to mandatory vaccines, says SBIm president

The government of São Paulo announced that proof of vaccination against Covid-19 will be required in state schools from the second quarter of this year. Students who do not present the certificate will not be prevented from attending schools, but their guardians will have a period of 60 days to rectify the situation.

In an interview with CNN, the president of the Brazilian Society of Immunizations (SBIm), Juarez Cunha, defended that all strategies be used to accelerate the pace of vaccination in the country, including for children.

However, he stated that convincing is a better mechanism for an immunization campaign than mandatory. “We prefer to go for the persuasion. Show that this vaccine protects, as well as all the other vaccines that we use in childhood”, he explained.

“Children have suffered with Covid, with hospitalizations, deaths, with the pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome and with the long Covid”, he highlighted, in defense of vaccination.

To date, more than 1.3 million doses have been administered to children in Brazil.

Regarding the safety of pediatric doses, the doctor said that those responsible can be calm when taking children to take the vaccine.

“We have a whole scientific basis, a basis of scientific societies, release of the main regulatory agencies worldwide, including Anvisa, of safe and effective vaccines”, he guaranteed.

As the dose used in children is different from that available for adults, the specialist recommended that the companion check if the bottle used is orange.
