Premiered this Thursday (28), the newest film by the actress Marieta Severo on the big screen, “To Our Children”. Directed by the Portuguese actress and filmmaker Maria de Medeiros the feature film addresses the story of Vera, a woman who has difficulty accepting her daughter’s homosexual relationship.
But the plot goes further and discusses how different generations see topics such as adoption, artificial insemination and seropositivity in children and adults.
“Aos Nosso Filhos” is an adaptation of the play written by Laura Castro based on experiences from her own life, as a “lesbian mother who also went through the process of insemination”.
“I’m sure that a lot of people will identify with important and sensitive issues that we show in history”, says Laura during the promotion of the film.
in conversation with the CNN director Maria de Medeiros believes that the film can help in the reflection “on how we should all be prepared for issues such as transmission between generations, the wonderful and complex relationship between parents and children, the choices that surprise us and the reasons that always we will have to ask forgiveness from our children, and also from our parents”.
For her, another important message is to respect the different generations to keep our own history alive. “It’s knowing where we came from that we can prepare our future and fight for it to be better,” she said.
In the film, Marieta is Vera, a courageous and progressive woman, who works as the coordinator of an NGO that takes care of HIV-positive children and who, suddenly, has to deal with her own contradictions in the face of choosing her daughter, Tânia (Laura Castro), who wants to be the mother of a child born in the womb of her partner, Vanessa (Marta Nóbrega).
For Maria de Medeiros, it is more “complex than it looks” to see a society dealing with deep-rooted prejudices.
“Behind prejudices are often real ideological or social confrontations. For a person of Vera’s generation and training (character), the consumerist and individualistic logic in which her daughter participates is very shocking, for example. Being able to speak, think, overcome traumas undoubtedly helps to overcome prejudices. And listening, dialoguing is the greatest proof of love”.
In any case, Maria de Medeiros sees that the next generations are guided by changes. “I have two daughters and I see that they are acutely aware of what patriarchal and sexist domination was. And they are fully committed to feminist and parity agendas. More than I was.”
She jokes that, unlike what Belchior says in the song “Como Nosso Pais” (We are still the same and we live like our parents), “there are things that change, yes”.
“Aos Nosso Filhos” is a Franco-Brazilian production that premiered in France in February 2022, and has gone through more than 20 festivals around the world, including the Rio Festival in 2019 and the Havana Festival in Cuba in 2020
Among the recognitions is an honorable mention at the Lesbian and Feminist Film Festival in Paris (Cineffable), the Best Screenplay award at the Milan Mix Festival, and the Student Award at the French Festival International du Film Politique (2022).
