“We want a clear message that condemns what happened”, says EU ambassador

In a meeting held at the German Embassy in Brasília this Friday (25), the ambassadors of Ukraine, Germany, the United States, France, Japan, the United Kingdom and the European Union once again demanded, on the part of the Brazilian government, a clear position of condemnation. to war on Ukrainian soil.

In a statement to the press, the EU representative, Ignacio Ybáñez, stated that the G7 countries are sending a very clear message to the Brazilian government.

“We are convinced that we are being heard by the Brazilian government. We want to hear a clear message that condemns what happened. Nobody can consider that it is off the table, especially a country that is in the UN Security Council”, pointed out the diplomat.

It is a consensus that President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) must personally condemn Russia’s military offensive against the neighboring country. For the French ambassador to Brazil, Brigitte Collet, an important step in positioning Brazil in the face of war will be the vote given this Friday in New York at the UN Security Council, which must define a resolution condemning the invasion of Russia. . “We hope that Brazil will vote in favor of this resolution, which will be a firm resolution, a strong resolution.”

The assessment of interlocutors is that it will not be possible for the Brazilian government to stay in the middle, since the text must be approved or vetoed. But even so, who represents the country is the President of the Republic himself, who so far has not taken a stand against Russian President Vladimir Putin.

For the German Ambassador to Brazil, Heiko Thoms, is that any country can be affected, if the actions of the Russian government are not condemned. “If the international community does not respond resolutely, tomorrow no UN member will be able to be sure that its borders are guaranteed,” he told reporters.

He pointed out that Brazil listed priorities when it joined the UN Security Council: “the first was the defense of the United Nations Charter and the defense of the principles of international law”.

“Exceptional support”

Asked about Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky’s statement that the country would be isolated, Ambassador Anatoliy Tkach pondered the actions of allied countries with the economic sanctions applied.

“Right now Ukraine has exceptional support from countries across the international community. Every step taken by Russia receives a response with the sanctions given by the countries of the world as the condemnation of the actions. And also military and financial aid to Ukraine. We have unprecedented support.”

The country, as it is not a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), will not receive American troops, which are being deployed in countries close to the conflict.

The German ambassador did not rule out the option of more sanctions being applied against Russia, such as the withdrawal of the Swift financial system, which in the countries’ assessment would further isolate Russians from financial integration. “There are other options on the table over time,” he said.
