“We want a realistic agenda”, says diplomat about Biden and Bolsonaro meeting

In an interview with CNN , this Wednesday (8), the diplomat and former US ambassador to Brazil Todd Chapman spoke about the expectation for the meeting between Presidents Joe Biden and Jair Bolsonaro (PL), at the Summit of the Americas, in Los Angeles. The former ambassador advocates that leaders discuss a “realistic agenda”.

The event is based in Los Angeles and brings together leaders from countries across the Americas to discuss and seek solutions to shared political issues.

“It is important that the two leaders of the largest and most important countries in the Americas sit down to talk about a topic of mutual interest, it is much more important to be pragmatic than to be ideological… right now, the question of the economy,” Chapman said.

Among the main topics to be addressed by the presidents of the United States and Brazil, the diplomat reiterates that the environment and security are some of the most important, and that the discussion is important for all countries in the region.

“When the State wants to benefit its citizens, the range of topics they can talk about is enormous: on the environment, food security, security in the Americas. There’s a lot to talk about, a lot of concrete things that can benefit not only the citizens of Brazil and the US, but across America,” he said.

President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) said this Wednesday (8) that he intends to show Joe Biden “what Brazil is” during the Summit of the Americas. The meeting between the heads of state is scheduled for Thursday (9).

“I think everyone knows what is happening in Brazil. Tonight I take off for the United States. Well accompanied, with the first lady, a rare thing for her to travel with me. I wouldn’t even go to the Summit of the Americas. I would not appear in photography. A dialogue was then held with Mr. Joe Biden’s advisor. A bilateral meeting was agreed, for as long as necessary. And we are going to talk to him, showing him what Brazil is all about,” Bolsonaro said.

“This is the time for concrete proposals, because the world demands it, I hope President Biden has very collective and concrete proposals to inspire American interaction,” Todd Chapman told CNN .
