Vice-President of the European Commission Josep Borrell, responsible for the diplomacy of the European Unionannounced this Sunday (27) that the bloc will announce new sanctions against Russia on Monday (28) due to the continuation of the invasion of Ukraineand that the next targets will be Russian businessmen.
“We want to affect the Russian elite, who support Putin and benefits from that regime, and in addition to this sanctions package, we have other sanctions that focus on corruption and disinformation,” Borrell said. The new sanctions are also expected to target political figures “who play a key role in Putin’s government, and who spread political and military propaganda.”
The diplomat also reinforced the sanctions already announced by the bloc between Saturday (26) and Sunday, including the closure of European Union airspace to Russian aircraft, the exclusion of Russian banks from the global payment system, the Swiftthe banning of Russian media from the bloc and the blocking of more than half of Russia’s central bank reserves.
“All this is done in coordination with international partners and with the clear message that if the Russian invasion of Ukraine is stopped, they will pay dearly for this action,” he said.
Borrell noted that the decision to ban Russia from Swift will need to be implemented before Monday, when central banks around the world resume their work.
He also stated that the European Union decided to provide support for the Ukrainian armed forceswith the delivery of lethal weapons to the country’s army and a package of 450 million euros with economic support measures for Ukraine and promotion of protection.

“We also want to support people affected by the conflict, who need humanitarian assistance for people who are leaving the country. They are not migrants, they are war refugees, and we are very concerned about the humanitarian dimension of this event, we need to act immediately to support the people and countries that will receive these refugees,” he said.
The official called the situation “challenging” but said the bloc was “ready to deal with it” amid predictions that the number of refugees leaving Ukraine “is gigantic”.
“We are worried about what could happen in Russia, we are afraid that Russia will not stop in Ukraine, and start exerting influence in neighboring countries, Moldova, Georgia and Balkan countries, so we have to be very attentive to what happens. ”, he evaluated.
