“We will give due importance”, says Pacheco about the ICMS ceiling project

The Senate President, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), said this Thursday (26) that senators will give “due importance” to the project approved in the Chamber of Deputies that establishes a ceiling of 17% in the collection of the ICMS for fuel, energy, transport and telecommunications.

According to him, there is a “common purpose” in the two houses to reduce prices. “There are many initiatives. Obviously, we don’t want to impose sacrifices, beyond the bill, on any federated entity or any character in this story, neither states, nor the federal government, nor Petrobras, but everyone has to collaborate”.

Pacheco said that the senators’ intention is to find a common ground to contain the prices of fuels whose rise he classified as very harmful to the Brazilian consumer and to the country’s production and as a pressure on the inflation .

In that sense, he stated that the Senate will seek to “converge all efforts to solve this problem”, citing as an example the project approved in the Chamber on Wednesday (25), by 403 votes to 10.

“We will, I repeat, give due importance to the project”, he pointed out.

However, the measure has been criticized by states and municipalities, who claim that the ICMS ceiling would lead to a drop in collection harming your financial health.

Pressure from governors and mayors has already led to a change in the project, with the establishment of a compensation by the Union until the end of this year for states and municipalities that have lost revenue with the measure.

The Senate president stated that “the governors have full access to the Senate, we are the Federation House, the Republic Senate is the Federation House, it is the State House, some have already made contact. I am entirely open to hearing them.”

The objective, according to the parliamentarian, is “to be able to dialogue and find a common point and a point of balance”, about the project.
