We will hardly see China abandon the socialist system, says professor

The 20th Congress of the Chinese Communist Party began last Sunday (16), which is expected to secure a third term for Xi Jinping at the helm of China.

In an interview with CNN Radio professor at the Institute of International Relations at UFRJ Alana Camoça stated that several issues were addressed in the opening speech.

“Achievements of the Chinese Communist Party were reported, as well as topics such as Chinese adaptation in the contemporary context and economic development,” he said.

She also highlights the issue of the Covid zero policy, which was maintained, and the debate over Taiwan – China considers reunification as “non-negotiable.”

For the professor, “despite the Chinese economic growth and the part of the population demanding a democracy”, China will hardly abandon the socialist model.

“The Chinese population understands that the regime achieves unbelievable feats, with the reduction of extreme poverty, for example, and the positioning of the country back in a central place in the international system.”

As far as Xi Jinping is concerned, Alana believes that he gains articulation power within the party.

“China continues to grow, despite the drop in pace, at enviable rates, and this strength is closely associated with the country’s contemporary context and Jinping’s political articulation,” he added.
