“We will make an offer by Friday,” says the Turk who wants to buy Chelsea

Turkish businessman Musin Bayrak said on Wednesday that his company was preparing to bid until Friday to buy English club Chelsea, but would like the blessing of sanctioned Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich for any deal.

In an interview with Reuters, Bayrak said AB Group Holding had been notified by the British government – which has taken over the Premier League’s oversight of sanctions against the Russian oligarch – that any bids would have to be submitted by the deadline. on Friday.

Bayrak said he expects bids for Chelsea to be around $ 1.3 billion, about half of the 2, 2.2 billion he says his company was prepared to pay Abramovic in the days before Abramovic was sanctioned.

“Chelsea’s market value should reflect the fact that the club recently lost sponsorship contracts,” he told Reuters. “The situation has changed since it was transferred to the government,” Bayrak said.

Abramovich bought Chelsea in 2003 for $ 184 million and owned the club in its most successful era.

Some Turkish media have questioned whether Bayrak’s company, which has interests in construction, real estate and cryptocurrencies, has the financial strength to buy Chelsea, saying the businessman was probably seeking publicity.

Bayrak denied this and said that he had the necessary funds. “We will apply by Friday,” he said in his Istanbul office.

Bayrak said he had $ 1.3 billion in cash and could easily borrow if he needed more: “Our companies are flirting. We’re not just talking about Chelsea.”
