The vice president of the Brazilian Society of Infectology Alexandre Naime Barbosa believes that the first weeks of January will see a rise in cases of Covid-19.
In an interview with CNN Radio he pointed out that the movement is expected due to the year-end get-togethers.
“Right after the holidays, in the first 15 days, we will have an increase in the number of cases, because people will gather together”, he explained.
Naime said, however, that there is no way to avoid crowds at this time of year, but care must be taken.
“If you have contact with more vulnerable people, the ideal is to wear a mask and stay away,” he said.
According to him, “rational coexistence” is needed, since “more and more people have to understand that we are living with the virus and we are not going to eradicate it in the short and medium term.”
At the same time, it is not the same “tragic situation” of 2020 and 2022: “I joke that we are with ‘Covid-22’, with the patient who has already received the vaccine and is prepared to fight the virus.”
Naime points out that those who are not vaccinated and who only have the basic vaccination schedule are the most susceptible, in addition to those who are immunosuppressed and those at the extremes of age.
Despite the recent increase in cases of Covid-19, the infectologist says that there is no new wave, but rather an expected spike due to a more transmissible variant of Omicron.
According to him, the arrival of the bivalent vaccine is an important weapon at this moment, as well as the intensification of childhood immunization.
