It’s true that “The Flash” was among the premieres most anticipated by the public, but the first week’s box office was far from expected. On display in 54 countries since June 15, the film has grossed US$ 139 million worldwide and only US$ 55 million in the US, when it was expected to reach US$ 70 million.
This is the third film in a row under the command of David Zaslav that presents a box office below the projection of the Warner in the opening week. “Black Adam” and “Shazam” may have their reasons for doing poorly in theaters, but “The Flash” has clear factors for low interest.
Despite good reviews from specialized vehicles and positive approval from the public and fans, DC Comics production faces a problem that goes beyond the script, direction or special effects. Ezra Miller the protagonist of the film, has been arrested several times in recent years and has been accused of psychological abuse, physical aggression and other cases that are being tried in court.
With a budget of US$ 200 million, it is expected that the promotion of the film will be strong enough to reach the expectations of the producer, since the slogan of “best hero movie ever made” did not seem to be enough.
Ezra Miller made a single appearance at the premiere of the feature, which only allowed photos on a red carpet without the right to videos and interviews with journalists. The other main names, such as Michael Keaton, Ben Affleck and Sasha Calle, spoke little to the press on other occasions, precisely to avoid questions related to the attitudes and mental health problems of the co-star.
The plot shows Barry Allen, the hero Flash, messing with the DC Comics multiverse to save his own family. In the collision of worlds, which alters the past, present and future, he becomes trapped in a reality that could end in annihilation.
The box office, of course, should increase in the coming weeks, but, ironically, “The Flash” needs to run a lot to bring the expected profit to Warner.
