Wear OS will receive an updated Google Play and support for navigation without being tied to a smartphone

Samsung can only be thanked for helping to breathe new life into Google’s Wear OS operating system. Today, August 10, the South Korean giant held its annual Unpacked event, where, in addition to hardware updates, it introduced several new features that will appear in Wear OS at the end of this year. New features include a revamped Play Store and improved support for Google Maps.

The new Galaxy Watch 5 and Watch 5 Pro smartwatch models run Wear OS 3.5 with the One UI Watch 4.5 shell. During the event, a Google representative spoke about the changes expected in Wear OS, including support for SoundCloud and Deezer music services. In addition, the mapping service Google Maps will be able to use offline navigation. At the moment, this feature is not available in Wear OS, in order to use navigation, you need to connect to a smartphone. Thus, users will be able to navigate using Google Maps, even if they have forgotten the smartphone at home.

As for the update to the Play Store on Wear OS, the company says the store will be in line with the version that is meant for mobile devices. That is, personal recommendations, popular applications and new categories will appear in the Play Store interface on the watch.
