Weber: ‘Hybrid attack on EU’ on EU-Belarus border

The leader of the EPP parliamentary group, Manfred Weber, speaking today in the European Parliament on the escalating humanitarian crisis on the EU-Belarus border, stressed that what was happening was not a real migration crisis, but a “hybrid attack on the EU”. .

Weber said the “dictator Lukashenko” was increasing pressure on the EU’s borders in retaliation for sanctions imposed on him by Brussels.

The first message the EU should send, the EPP leader said, is that “the EU is not being blackmailed” and that migrants are the victims.

Weber stressed that Lithuania and Latvia, in cooperation with the European Asylum Support Office (EASO), helped people who arrived at their borders in a responsible and humane way. However, this is not the case with Poland, which does not accept European aid and there is no picture or transparency of what exactly is happening there.

In addition, the EPP leader said that High Representative Josep Borel and Commission Vice President Margaritis Schoinas are talking to EU partners in Iraq and Turkey. He expressed the hope that these contacts will bring results and that they will understand in these countries that it is not possible to support the model of smugglers.

“We also need to remind them of the responsibility of airlines,” Weber added. “If one wants to make money on European soil, such as Turkish Airlines or other companies, they must understand that they can not be part of the traffickers model, as is the case today. We must deny them the right to land at European airports.” then added.

Regarding the protection of the external borders, Weber said: “Nobody wants fences. But when a wall was built on the Greek-Turkish border, the blackmail by Erdogan stopped.” He recalled that Charles Michel, Ursula von der Leyen and David Sassoli went to the Greek border and welcomed the commitment of the Greek government to protect the European border. “Nobody wants fences, but if it is not technically possible to protect our borders otherwise, then investing in natural borders can be possible,” Weber concluded.
