The head of the European People’s Party parliamentary group in the European Parliament, Manfred Weber, expressed the opinion that the majority of MEPs would be in favor of banning the import of oil from Russia.
In an interview with n-tv, Weber said he was convinced there would be a large majority for such a resolution, in an effort to limit Moscow’s revenue as much as possible. “There are big profits that would no longer go to Russia,” he said, adding that he also supported a possible Russian coal embargo proposed by the European Commission. He emphasized, however, that it was up to the Member States, not the European Parliament, to approve such sanctions.
In the same vein, Mr Weber called for even tougher sanctions on Russia “as soon as possible”. “We can not continue to fund the Putin system that continues this horrible war,” said the German Christian Socialist.
