Weigh citizens in squares and streets in Turkey – scales and tapes everywhere

Turkey has implemented a national campaign against obesity, with the aim of controlling 10 million citizens’ BMI (BMI) by 10 July. As part of the action, healthcare professionals have been developed in all 81 provinces of the country, equipped with scales and tapes. In squares, shopping centers, parks, and even on bus stops or outside stadiums, citizens receive surprise BMI checks by health inspectors, according to reports. According to the Daily Mail, Turkey’s Health Minister Kemal Memisoglou told a nursing conference last week that “50% of our society is overweight”. He pointed out the dangers associated with obesity, saying: “Being overweight means that you are sick, it means that we will get sick in the future.
