Apple launched the iPhone Self Service Repair Program. And this may seem like a great idea, but there are caveats.

iFixit specialists praised Apple for such an initiative (although the company was simply forced to take such a step by new laws), but noted that one big problem remains in this matter.
The fact is that in Apple smartphones, almost all the main components cannot simply be taken and replaced. They need to be paired with the device at the software level. As part of the self-repair program, this works as follows: when purchasing parts, the buyer must enter the serial number of the device or IMEI, and any ordered parts must be paired with the specified device after installation. To initiate the pairing process, known as System Configuration, customers need to contact the self-service store’s support team via chat or phone. According to iFixit, this strategy limits the ability of third-party repairs through loss of function and scare tactics and could drastically limit the options for iPhone refurbishment companies.
As of today, you can buy the official Apple iPhone 12 screen and install it on your device yourself without any problems. So far, do-it-yourself repairs have been about keeping the speaker and Face ID sensor intact, then very carefully moving them to a new screen, and finally ignoring some OS warnings. If your build has been corrupted or failed, you are out of luck. The new program will solve this problem – provided you bought an official Apple part.
However, to check this part, you need to enter your phone’s serial number or IMEI. And when you have finished installing the part, you need to pair it with the phone you specified at the time of purchase using the wireless network configuration software. The requirement to pair parts essentially sets the iPhone’s expiration date. When a repairman receives a working phone with no parts, they will not be able to fully repair a product requiring a display replacement, even if they have an original Apple display from another phone
