Well, everything that other manufacturers do not pay attention to. Review Vivo V23

It’s no secret that design is cyclical. In the world of smartphones, this rule also works – the year is 2022, and manufacturers, one after another, return previously discarded solutions: angular edges, a flat display … Today I got Vivo V23, one of the most beautiful Android smartphones of recent times, which is also is a prime example of this trend. Well, let’s figure it out, is there something else behind the beautiful appearance?

Equipment

An unexpectedly rich set

Acquaintance with Vivo V23 begins with unpacking, which gives a long-forgotten sense of respect for the buyer. Judge for yourself: the box contains a transparent case, a powerful 44-watt charger, headphones with a Mini Jack connector, and an adapter for connecting them to a smartphone. I won’t deny it – the headset is unlikely to fit the definition of “High-End”, but its very presence definitely pleased. I also note that two films are glued to the smartphone at once. And if the first one has technical information, then the second one can be left for everyday use.

Design

Wait, I’ve seen this somewhere before

The pearl of Vivo V23 is its strict and elegant design. The smartphone is made of premium materials (metal and glass), which, coupled with the rough processing of both the edges and the back panel, creates an excellent combination that you don’t want to hide in a case at all. In fact, if we compare the various matte surfaces on the smartphone market, Vivo, in my opinion, managed to create the most pleasant to the touch. Believe me, I have something to compare.

By the way, in addition to the dark colors that came to my review, there is also a brighter one called “Solar Spectrum”. Thanks to the use of photochromic glass, it can change color under the influence of the sun.

As for constructive solutions, everything is in order here as well. The camera does not stick out too much, the smartphone itself is very thin (only 7.39 mm), and the edges, although flat, do not cut the hand. The only caveat is that the side of the Vivo V23 is very reminiscent of the iPhone of the last two years. Even the antenna strips look like a nod to Apple. However, I say this without any negative at all: the smartphone does not feel like a copy, it rather takes the direction and does the rest in its own way.

Display

Do bangs bother you?

Vivo V23 boasts a 6.4-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 2400×1080 pixels and a refresh rate of 90Hz. The screen is perfectly calibrated and does not raise questions, even the PWM flicker factor is within reasonable limits, its maximum value was 61% at 15% brightness. But what may raise questions is the bangs, in which there are two front cameras. In my opinion, there is nothing criminal in its presence (I speak as the owner of the iPhone), however, I have repeatedly heard opinions that people consider any cutouts in the screen to be unacceptable. Well, this is a personal matter for everyone. I will only note that the side frames and the chin are minimized here.

Camera

Frontal works wonders

There are three cameras on the back of the Vivo V23:

  • 64-megapixel primary with f / 1.89 aperture;
  • 8MP f/2.2 ultra wide-angle;
  • 2-megapixel macro with f/2.4 aperture.

The main module produces a decent picture in both good and mediocre lighting. Nevertheless, in some situations, excessive work of algorithms is noticeable – oversharp makes itself felt. I am glad that the camera works clearly and quickly, in this regard, the smartphone can be compared with the flagships of the market.

Slightly less rosy is the situation with the over-width. It produces not the most detailed picture, which is very different in colors from the pictures on the main camera. In my opinion, it is worth shooting on it only in sunny weather.

However, the main cameras on the smartphone, in my opinion, are two front-facing cameras, the main one at 50 megapixels and the ultra-wide angle at 8 megapixels. This tandem is reinforced by a system of two flashes, which saves the situation in the dark. A rather unusual, but effective solution to the problem – I don’t remember that someone else would put two front flashes at once.

As for the quality of the pictures, it is at a very high level, especially if we talk about the 50-megapixel camera with autofocus. The smartphone copes even with difficult lighting in the form of warm room light and makes the colors in the photo worthy of posting on the social network. At the same time, on Vivo V23, it seems to me, there is no soap inherent in an Android smartphone – selfies come out moderately sharp and clear.

Iron

Performed well in games

The heart of the device was the MediaTek Dimensity 920 chipset paired with 8/12 GB of RAM. The built-in storage can be 128 or 256 GB, depending on the version – I had the youngest in my hands. Nevertheless, this did not stop the Vivo V23 from showing itself perfectly in games: in World of Tanks, the FPS value did not drop below 60 even in heavy scenes at high settings, and in Genshin Impact, an impeccably smooth game was observed on medium graphics.

However, I can’t call the performance unambiguously stable – in the shell every now and then there are small jerks, for which the eye clings. Perhaps the matter is in the pre-release firmware (the smartphone was reviewed even before the start of official sales). If so, the issues will most likely be fixed in future updates.

Battery

Not better, but not worse than others

Despite the thin body, Vivo packed a 4200 mAh battery into the V23, which is enough for a day and a half of everyday work. In the proprietary test Trashbox.ru, this translates into 16 and a half hours – a good result. A complete 44 W charging unit allows you to replenish about 60 percent in half an hour, which means that even if you did not put your smartphone at night, the situation is not critical.

Review

After 5 days of use

Vivo V23 is a bright player in the market of devices for 40-50 thousand rubles, and now we are not talking about colors at all. The fact is that when developing a smartphone, the manufacturer clearly concentrated on design, tactile sensations and photo capabilities, and these are exactly the points that competitors often do not pay attention to in pursuit of the most powerful processor and large battery. In other words, if you want a stylish device with a good front camera, this is the place to go, but if you are looking for the best price / performance ratio, you might want to look at another smartphone.
