Welt: Ukraine wants weapons from Berlin that it would like for itself

Ukraine would like “some of the best German warships in the world” and “state-of-the-art air defense systems” – if they are armed by Germany.

But the Federal Republic itself needs rearmament, according to a Welt article.

The debate over German arms deliveries to Ukraine is unrealistic – on both sides, it is noted. According to the Welt, Kiev wants weapons that Berlin does not have. The federal government wants to avoid the issue and has long assumed that the classic “rule of three” for engaging in crisis areas beyond diplomacy would be sufficient in this case: checkbook, medical assistance, military training.

Chancellor Olaf Solz (SPD), for example, refers to the “nearly two billion euros” that Germany has mobilized in recent years to stabilize Ukraine.

Defense Secretary Christine Lambrecht (SPD) wants to hand over a 5.3 million-euro hospital this month, has already delivered respirators and has federal army hospitals available to treat wounded Ukrainians. Other members of the government also support the expansion of continuing officer training.
