West Bank “Day of Rage”: Two Palestinians killed by fire – Long-running clashes

Two Israeli soldiers were wounded today in clashes with hundreds of Palestinian protesters in the occupied territories. West Bank, announced the army, which killed two Palestinians in separate clashes, according to the Palestinian Authority.

Many rallies, which turned into clashes with the army, took place across the West Bank today as part of a general strike and “demonstrations of anger” against the Israeli occupation and in solidarity with the people of Gaza.

In addition to the West Bank, general strikes and demonstrations also took place in occupied East Jerusalem and in Arab cities in Israel.

Near Ramallah, hundreds of youths hurled stones and Molotov cocktails at deployed soldiers, who responded with tear gas and plastic bullets, according to AFP reporters.

“Several rioters fired several shots at the soldiers and a commander on the sidelines of the protest, injuring two soldiers in the leg,” the Israeli military said in a statement, adding that “the soldiers responded by opening fire.”

Shortly afterwards, the Palestinian Ministry of Health announced the death of a 25-year-old Palestinian, Mohammad Hamid, in al-Bireh, northeast of Ramallah.

These numerous clashes have resulted in 70 people being injured today, including five in serious condition, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

In the rest of the West Bank, following calls for a general strike by Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah party, businesses and schools in Ramallah and other cities remained closed today.

Palestinian operations in East Jerusalem remained closed in the Old City as well as in the “mixed” city of Haifa where Jews and Arabs live in northern Israel. Protest organizer Raza Zatar said 90% of businesses remained closed in Arab neighborhoods.

Earlier in the day, the army said it had “neutralized” a Palestinian who tried to attack soldiers near Hebron, and Palestinian medical sources confirmed to AFP that the man had been killed.

Today’s deaths add to the 20 Palestinians killed by the army in the West Bank since May 10, the date of the start of hostilities between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, according to Palestinian sources.
