A Palestinian activist, member of the Islamist movement Hamaswas killed on Friday night during a clash with Israeli soldiers in the occupied West Bankaccording to convergent sources.
“Muhammad Jibril Roumane was killed due to serious injuries caused by bullets from the occupying forces in El Bire”next to Ramallah, the Palestinian Authority’s health ministry said in a press release, adding that a second Palestinian was injured, without giving any details about the circumstances of the incident.
Hamas, for its part, in a statement of its own, presented Roumane as its member, who fell a “heroic martyr” as he “defended the freedom of (his) people.”, near the Jewish settlement of Psagot. His obituary is accompanied by the photograph of a very young man.
From the other side, the Israeli army spoke of “attackers who threw Molotov cocktails at a military outpost adjacent to (the Jewish settlement of) Psagot”which neighbors El Bire.
“Soldiers (…) spotted the suspects and responded by opening fire with live bullets,” according to the same source. “Two attackers neutralized”the text continues.
Asked about this by AFP, a spokeswoman for the Israeli army declined to confirm whether one of the two was dead, as announced by the Palestinian Authority and Hamas.
At least 242 Palestinians, 32 Israelis, a Ukrainian woman and an Italian have been killed since the start of the year in violent incidents linked to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, according to an AFP tally based on official statements from both sides.
