After hours of conversation between the US government envoy and Russian President Vladimir Putin, United States authorities speak of ‘cautious optimism’ over a ceasefire in Ukraine. Kremlin’s position is still uncertain, and the international community presses for the truce in the war.
US President Donald Trump went to social networks to describe the meeting between the US envoy Steve Witkoff, and Russian President Vladimir Putin, as very good and productive.
Trump wrote that “there is a very good chance of this horrible and bloody war finally ending.” But it also stated that “at this moment, there are Ukrainian soldiers surrounded by the Russian army, in a very bad and vulnerable position.”
The US president said he had asked Putin a lot to make the lives of these soldiers spared.
The Russian President stated that Ukraine needs to give orders for troops to income. And that the situation of the ceasefire is beginning to move.
“In this sense, I would like to emphasize that if they surrender their weapons and surrender, they will have guaranteed life and decent treatment, according to international legislation and the laws of the Russian Federation,” Putin said.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio, head of American diplomacy, said there is reasons for cautious optimism regarding the possibility of a truce. But he acknowledged that the situation remains complex and difficult.
At the same time, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky asks the United States and other European allies to press Russia for the ceasefire and said he sees a possibility of the war ending “quickly.”
Despite Trump’s approach to move away from Europeans and negotiate directly with Russia, on Friday (14) G7 countries joined to reinforce support for Ukraine. In a joint statement, the leaders threatened to impose more sanctions against Russia if Kremlin does not accept the ceasefire.
Amid US distance, European countries are increasingly talking about investing in their own defense.
Reuters had access to a European Commission document proposing a collective purchase of weapons, a action described as the most effective way in terms of costs of building their own defense, after a drop in spending following the Cold War.
