West won’t recognize dominated regions as part of Russia, says professor

In an interview with CNN, this Saturday (9), the professor of contemporary history at USP Angelo Segrillo commented on the current context of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. According to him, “the West will not recognize the dominated regions as part of Russia”.

Segrillo believes that only Russian President Vladimir Putin’s allies “should recognize an annexation”. For the teacher, the possibility of an agreement must occur, mainly, “because of mutual exhaustion”.

“Russia itself has been greatly impacted by economic sanctions. Putin must claim victory if he achieves the neutrality of Ukraine and the annexation of the already occupied regions in eastern Ukraine.”

Finally, Segrillo says that “there is a lot of talk that Russia should try to reach an agreement by May 9”.

The date refers to the Russian national holiday of ‘Victory Day’, when the end of World War II and the lives of Russian soldiers who were killed in the conflict are celebrated.
