Along with the new WD_Black SSD family, Western Digital has introduced an embedded flash platform that meets the UFS 3.1 specification. It is designed to create solutions for mobile devices, automotive electronics, IoT devices, augmented and virtual reality headsets, unmanned aerial vehicles and other emerging applications.
The platform, based on the JEDEC-approved specification, according to the manufacturer, delivers the speed, reliability and versatility that customers expect to create small, thin and lightweight solutions. By leveraging vertical integration capabilities to optimize NAND, firmware, controller design, software, and driver designs, Western Digital can efficiently design custom solutions for a variety of markets based on a single UFS 3.1 architecture. The new platform is expected to deliver up to 90% faster sequential write speeds over the previous generation, helping to realize the speed potential for 5G and Wi-Fi 6 downloads, 8K video playback, burst photography and more.
Western Digital has already developed the first products on this platform, starting with built-in storage for mobile devices, and is working with partners who plan to use them in their products. Deliveries are to begin in the second half of the year.
