Western Ukraine’s creditor governments to suspend debt service

Western Ukraine’s creditor governments on Wednesday urged debt holders to accept Kiev’s request to defer their debt payments by two years and said they would suspend payments owed to them.

The Ukrainian government on Wednesday issued a resolution saying it would ask holders of international bonds to agree to a two-year delay in repaying their debt so it can focus its scarce financial resources on repelling Russia.

“Approval of Ukraine’s proposals would represent substantial support for the government and people of Ukraine,” Western creditor governments said in a statement issued by the French Ministry of Finance.

The group, which includes Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States, said it would secure a coordinated suspension of Kiev’s debt service from Aug. 1 until the end of 2023, and potentially for an additional year.

“We also strongly encourage all other official bilateral creditors to quickly reach an agreement with Ukraine on a suspension of debt service,” the group added.
