What about the Karish deposit and Lebanon’s claims against Israel?

Of Thanks to Floudopoulos

The Karis field, in which the FPSO “Energean Power” has been installed with the aim of starting the production of natural gas from the third quarter of the year, is outside the claims of Lebanon, as they are reflected in the maps that the country has submitted to the UN, in in the context of negotiations with Israel on the definition of maritime borders.

This image is highlighted by Israeli media, such as the English-language version of Haaretz, in the margins of the warnings of Lebanon and the organization “Hezbollah” not to proceed with the production of natural gas, since they believe that Karis, which contains about 40 billion. μ. gas, is located in a disputed area.

The issue, signed by Avi Sharf and Ben Samuels, presents a map submitted by Lebanon to the UN and shows the satellite image of “Energean Power” of the floating unit that will develop the Karis field and which belongs to the company Energean, listed on the London and Israeli stock exchanges, which had its operations in Greece.

According to Haaretz columnists, “Energean Power” has been installed 10 kilometers southwest of the area that Lebanon considers to be its EEZ, based on maps that the country itself has submitted to the UN.

The two countries have been at loggerheads over the EEZ issue for decades, and have virtually suspended all negotiations for the past two years.

In an effort to find a point of discussion, the information wants the American diplomat Amos Hochstein to be already in Lebanon for talks with the Lebanese government on the issue, which was raised a few days ago by the Lebanese President Michel Aoun himself.

Israel, through a joint statement by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Defense and Energy, had responded categorically that the Karis deposit is within Israeli territory.

In fact, the Israeli newspaper Globes claimed on Friday that, on the sidelines of the dispute, Lebanon has effectively withdrawn its claims for the Karis deposit, as this was set as a prerequisite for Hochstein to travel to the country.

On Sunday, however, near the border with Israel, Lebanese citizens rallied against the start of production from the Karis field.
