What are the possible impacts of Sweden and Finland’s NATO membership plans

Finland and Sweden this week formalized their applications to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Historically known for a neutral military stance, the two Nordic countries decided to join the bloc almost three months after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began. The rapprochement between the Ukrainian government and NATO was one of the reasons that influenced the Russian military operation in the neighboring country.

Faced with the announcement by Finland and Sweden, Russia reacted with statements in which it classified the decision of the two countries as a “mistake with far-reaching consequences”. The entry of the two nations in the organization depends on the approval of the current members of the military alliance, but faces resistance – Turkey has even declared that it will vote against the new accessions.

In this episode of E Tem Mais, Evandro Cini presents an assessment of the reactions to NATO’s expansion plans. To describe the possible impacts of the alliance’s growth and how the entry of Finland and Sweden into the entity affects the international geopolitical framework, the researcher Carlos Gustavo Poggio, professor of international relations at Faap, and the political scientist Mauricio Santoro, from Uerj, participate in this episode.
