What companies are asking for to restart the hydrocarbon market

The companies that have been granted the exploitation rights in these areas appear ready to recover by thawing their research programs in Crete and the Ionian.

These companies were known to have suspended their research activities, as the climate in the domestic hydrocarbon market had recently deteriorated.

However, the Prime Minister’s recent report on “the exploitation of national gas fields with economic interest”, signaled the change in the government’s attitude towards the exploitation of domestic hydrocarbons.

In fact, according to sources in the survey, the market expects the government to reconsider its position that there has been occasional interest in developing domestic hydrocarbon deposits.

In fact, government sources have reportedly told the companies involved in the investigation that the market is now being treated “in a new, more positive context”, as shaped by the general developments of the energy crisis and the new geopolitical balances in the field of energy.

“We feel that the government’s position has been reconsidered, but we expect tangible moves,” said the same sources, noting that until recently the hydrocarbon case had been left to “die late” amid delays, bureaucracy and other obstacles.

In this context, the message from the companies is that despite the delays and the “back and forth”, if there is an appropriate response from the Greek state, the investigations can be restarted.

This is despite the fact that the Greek market is essentially unexplored and research data, especially for areas of high interest such as Crete, are extremely limited.

In any case, the geopolitical shift in Europe and the decision to de-depend on Russian gas, combined with high energy prices, give additional impetus to any hopes for a resumption of the Greek hydrocarbon market.
